Spanish Immersion Opportunities

Immersion Logo At Forest Lake Area High School, Spanish instructors have worked with groups of both partial and full immersion students since 2010. To build on the content and language work that immersion students began at Southwest Junior High, full immersion content courses were added to the social studies and language arts departments. These immersion content courses allow students to fulfill graduation requirements in core classes while still building their Spanish skills at a challenging level. Students are also supported in language work by the opportunity to take Spanish courses through Levels IV and V, which are paired with the university system and offer college credits.

Our content area instructors have degrees in their subject areas, and are highly proficient in Spanish, enabling immersion students to continue refining their language skills. The course offerings for immersion students are outlined below.

What are your options for the High School Immersion Spanish Track?
After taking Immersion Spanish 3 as a 9th grader, here are your options:
 

 

10thGrade
 

 

NOTE: Based on results from a Spanish placement exam administered in the spring, you may be recommended to take Spanish 4 to improve your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
  • World History: This required course is going to be offered in Spanish. You will earn a SOCIAL STUDIES (required) credit. 
  • Immersion Spanish 4: This is a one term class for students who have taken Immersion Spanish 3 or who are native speakers.

  • Spanish 5: This is a yearlong class (two-term). Successful completion of this course may enable students to earn 4 semester credits from Southwest State Minnesota University. (College Now Intermediate Spanish 202) Juniors must be in the top 1/3 of their class to qualify for taking the course.

  • U.S. History: This required course is going to be offered in Spanish. It is a semester long class taught on a block. You will earn a SOCIAL STUDIES (required) credit. 

  • Popular Literature (Pop. Lit.): This is a one-term (.5 credit) course. Ideally you should have begun or completed Spanish 5 before taking this class. You will earn a LANGUAGE ARTS elective credit.

  • A.P. Spanish Literature: The high school is planning to offer this course your senior year. You may earn COLLEGE CREDIT depending on the score you receive on the A.P. Exam.
