The Coast Guard Academy, one of the smallest of the five U.S. military academies, doesn't take many students. Roughly 300 students are selected from across the United States each year. The competition is fierce, but if you make the cut, the rewards are great.
Hunter Shortly, a Forest Lake Area High School Senior, will be reaping those rewards. He is the only Minnesotan selected for next fall's incoming freshman class. As a cadet at the Coast Guard Academy, Hunter will be developing his physical fitness, character, and leadership skills as he works towards a Bachelor of Science degree - tuition free.
