Spanish Immersion

At Forest Lake Area High School, Spanish instructors have worked with groups of both partial and full immersion students since 2010. To build on the content and language work that immersion students developed before high school, full immersion content courses have been added to the Social Studies and Language Arts departments. These immersion content courses allow students to fulfill graduation requirements in core classes while still building their Spanish skills at a challenging level. Students are also supported in language work by the opportunity to take Spanish courses through Level V, which is paired with Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) and offers college credit.

Our content area instructors have degrees in their subject areas, and are highly proficient in Spanish, enabling immersion students to continue refining their language skills. The course offerings for immersion students are outlined below.

9th Grade
Social Studies

Human Geography: This required course is offered in Spanish through the Social Studies Department.
You will earn a SOCIAL STUDIES (.5 required) credit. 
 

Citizenship and Government: This required course is offered in Spanish through the Social Studies Department.
You will earn a SOCIAL STUDIES (.5 required) credit. 

 10thGrade
Social Studies

World History A&B: This required social studies course is offered in Spanish. You will earn a SOCIAL STUDIES (1.0 required) credit.

11thGrade
Social Studies

U.S. History A&B: This required social studies course is offered in Spanish. You will earn a SOCIAL STUDIES (1.0 required) credit. 

Spanish Language
Development

Immersion Spanish 9: This is a two term course for students who have successfully completed Immersion Spanish 8 (formerly Immersion Spanish 3). 

Immersion Spanish 10: This is a one term class for students who have taken Immersion Spanish 9 (formerly Immersion Spanish 4) or who are native speakers.

Spanish 5: This is a yearlong class (two-term). Successful completion of this course may enable students to earn 4 semester credits from Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU). (College Now Intermediate Spanish 202.) Juniors need to be in the top 1/3rd and Seniors must be in the top 1/2 of their class to qualify for taking the course.

Language Arts

Popular Literature in Spanish: This is a one-term (.5 credit) course designed for Immersion Spanish students, heritage Spanish speakers, or traditional Spanish students that have begun or completed Spanish 5.  Students who take this course will receive a language arts elective credit.
